Bohemian Bedroom – Part 2

2014-02-13 10.31.05So you’ve seen my inspiration, a bohemian bedroom, lots of bright colours, artwork on the walls, fabrics, beads, a little oasis in the big city. I thought I would update you on the progress we’ve made! We have a lovely bright duvet cover from Dunelm, with a floral pattern, and a throw – which is actually a single duvet cover in purple silky fabric with some lovely embroidery. There are some pretty cushions, which I am hoping to add to, the Love cushion is from New Look, the purple one is from Dunelm and the patchwork one was made by yours truly. I bought the rainbow rug years ago. The drawers are standard ones that came with the flat but I have blu-tacked tissue paper to alternate drawers to add a bit more colour.2014-02-13 10.34.08 The garland above the bed is made from beaded hearts and I will post a tutorial soon if you would like one for your own bohemian bedroom!I love lamps! My bedside lamp is a giant silver pineapple from Next and Saam’s is a blue lava lamp from Clas Ohlson. I bought the batman comic canvas for Sam for christmas from The Range, it adds a bit of retro geekiness! The paintings above the bed are from my A Level art project on Dramatic Effects of Light and they are oil on canvas. This is our amazing tree of life wall hanging, which I bought from the Hippy Hole in Grand Central Hall, the colours are perfect and the indian looking pattern is perfect. The guitars are our babies and add to the vintage recording studio feel. 2014-02-13 08.35.38Sam bought me this gorgeous mirror for christmas from a Fairtrade shop on Bold Street, the carved wood is perfect. 2014-02-13 08.33.33

This is my art wall! The pencil sketches are of an elephant and Taj Mahal, the vertical painting on the right is inspired by a Klimt piece, the bubbles are just in different coloured acrylic. And the pyramids, seascape and two skies are acrylic pieces – I just love the sky!2014-02-13 08.36.54

That’s our progress so far, there is still more white than I would prefer but the few touches we have added have made the room feel much more homely.

Why We Love Records

As I have said before, me and Sam are big music fans. Sam did Audio Music Production at uni so we have a pretty snazzy sound system, and a record player. There is something so lovely about listening to vinyl, the crackles, knowing that the order you are listening to was thought up by the band 20, 30, 40 years ago, hearing a whole album through. I was chatting to Sam’s 13 year old cousin a couple of weeks ago and he thought that albums were completely pointless, he said why don’t you just download the song you actually want. But that isn’t the point. I think it’s sad that my generation doesn’t get the buzz of tracking down a record you really love (I found Simon and Garfunkel’s debut Wednesday Morning 3am from a charity shop last week – and then listened to it about 15 times, bliss!) and don’t get the concept of sitting and listening to an album just because it is awesome, not as a background. The album art, the lyrics booklet, the information about the band on the back of the sleeve – it’s an experience.

So there is my ode to vinyl albums, now which to purchase… we are very lucky as my father in law has awesome music taste and gave us his hi fi and the records we wanted (Thanks Steve!), we also live in an awesome city which has some great record shops, like Probe Records near the Bluecoat, Cult Vinyl in Grand Central Hall and a pretty awesome Oxfam on Bold Street.

Here are some of my favourite records – Led Zeppelin Destroyer.

Led_Zeppelin_-_The_DestroyerThis is a bootleg of a Led Zeppelin gig in 1977 and it is awesome, the improvisation, the endless guitar solos, the way each song blends into the next. Led Zep are a band I will forever wish I could have seen but this is pretty much as close as you can get in 2014!

Paul Simon – GracelandGraceland_cover_-_Paul_SimonI love, love, love this album. My dad had it on tape when I was little and we would listen to it in the car. I managed to find it in the Music Consortium Vinyl Emporium which has unfortunately shut down now, but it really is one of the best records. The african rhythms, the incredible harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the amazing lyrics. We also were lucky enough to see Paul Simon play the whole album through in Hyde Park for Hard Rock Calling in 2012 – awesome!487335_414495475254643_190520160_nUFO – ObsessionUFO-Obsession-505238This album is great, Sam listened to it when he was younger and remembers it from when he was a kid. The songs are catchy, almost poppy but it is still a great classic rock album.

ABBA – The Best of ABBAlpbestboxfrontEverybody loves ABBA, I don’t care whether you wear a suit, a leather trench coat, orange overalls, tie dye harem pants, there is no human out there who won’t smile when Dancing Queen comes on. It’s cheesy, it’s poppy, it will always put you in a better mood and this is the ultimate collection (I nicked it off my dad).

Black Sabbath – We Sold Our Souls For Rock N RollWe+Sold+Our+Soul+for+Rock+n+Roll+disc+2+313s6MzRAgLSam loves Black Sabbath and this record has a lot of their really good songs in one place. It is a good looking album, it has artwork inside, you can flick through and read about them, which is what records are all about.

Simon and Garfunkel – The Concert in Central Park

2e0cf839231a3b966d9b6370d310d4ecd7208907You may have noticed I’m a bit of a Simon and Garfunkel fan and this is one of their best albums. Again, it’s a gig I would have loved to go to (unfortunately I wasn’t born) and it is just incredible, their harmonies are stunning, their song writing is amazing, and it is one of those albums you can listen to again and again.

Rainbow – Down to EarthRainbow+-+Down+To+Earth+-+Clear+vinyl+-+LP+RECORD-470055This is one of Sam’s choices. It has a really good selection of songs, it is catchy and has awesome riffs . It is one of the rare albums where every song is good – you know them all and they are brilliant.

The Beatles – 1967-70Blue67-70We couldn’t have a list of records without the Beatles. This collection is amazing, in only three years some of my favourite songs of all time were written and performed by the Fab Four.

So there we go, a tiny selection from our extensive collection. Music really is amazing, and listening to vinyls is an experience that not enough people enjoy, so have a rummage through your parents records and buy a cheap record player.

Bohemian Bedroom

I love our flat, I really do, the location is amazing, the layout is good and we have tonnes of space. However it is a generic rented flat, white walls, ikea furniture and beige carpet and me and Sam aren’t really generic people. Over the last year and a half we have been slowly but surely putting our own stamp on this little place, hanging some of my paintings, adding a bit of furniture and a fluffy green rug, however the bedroom has been kind of ignored. I had this idea in my head of a bohemian bedroom, somewhere really quirky, with an eastern feel, lots of clutter and various eccentricities, reds and golds and fabrics and beads. The only problem is that the flat is rented so we can’t do anything drastic and unchangeable. So I will share with you my inspiration and keep updating the blog on our bohemian bedroom and how this idea in my head actually turns out.

So, inspiration… here are a few spaces which I really love.

Call me nerdy all you like but I adore Firefly, it really is one of the best sci fi shows ever made. I love Inara’s shuttle, the draped fabric, candles, lamps and red and purple colour scheme.

Music is a big deal in this house. We have far too many guitars and a rather large record collection so I love these old vintage feeling recording studios, the bright colours and crazy wall coverings.

There is something about old orthodox and coptic churches that I find really inspiring, I love the colours, the sumptuously painted icons and the gaudy over the top decor.

I also want to add a hippy feel, inspired by the 70s, the peace and love movement and Simon and Garfunkel. Why not?!

So there we go, an internet moodboard if you will. I will keep you updated on progress, I have just bought a giant indian wall hanging which needs photographing!
