Rainbow Knotted Necklace

Knotted NecklaceI’ve seen a few of these knotted necklaces on the high street and pinterest and I like the idea, but the colours are rather drab, and they mostly use the same beads. I decided to make my own, using fab bright colours and lots of sparkle. This is quite a big project, a good few hours, so make sure you have a couple of films and somewhere safe to keep it between sessions.

You will need: some really lovely beads and a lot of them! I found a great website – http://www.k2-accessories.com which sells 25g beads for £0.40, another great source for beads are sets, which you can find in shops like The Works and The Range or Hobbycraft. You will also need invisble thread, metal wire and pliers (or a clasp if you prefer).

Cut your invisble thread into 10 1m lengths. Choose the colour for one strand, tie a bead to the thread, leaving 3 inches of bare thread. Start to thread your beads onto the thread and carry on until you have 3 inches left. Secure the last bead with a couple of granny knots. Make a small circle out of the wire with your pliers and spiral the wire so you have a secure loop.Tie the beaded strand to the loop securely. 20140225_104350Now simply repeat this with the other invisible threads. Don’t worry if your knots look a bit messy, you can always trim the ends of at the end. It’s important all your beaded strands are the same length, so your beaded knot is nice and neat.Knotted NecklaceMake an S Shape out of another shirt length of wire, this will form your clasp. Make a little loop in one end of the S, and a hook on the other. 20140225_104236Tie the other ends of the beaded strands to the loop which is part of the S clasp. Again, don’t worry about it being a bit messy!

knotted necklaceI’m dead pleased with the result, I love statement jewelery and making your own with your own colours is so much better than buying one off the high street. I’ve had loads of compliments on my necklace, I think using different types of beads adds a great texture and you can use whatever colours you want. This is a lovely project, and I hope you enjoy making your own.

Love, Mrs Gardom
