‘So Many Buttons’ Garland

20140204_213502I think I may have mentioned my love of buttons, and hangy things – so I made a button garland! A bit like those gaudy 70s bead curtains but with buttons – therefore awesome. This is a bit of a fiddly one, lots of tying knots with invisible thread but totally worth it. Make one for your door, your wall, your window – be creative! I chose to do a multicoloured one as our room is always needing a bit more colour but if you want to make one with coordinated colours you can buy packs of coordinating buttons from most craft shops. I recently bought a big job lot of buttons from amazon, eBay is also great.

You will need: scissors, invisible thread, wool (3 colours), a safety pin and buttons, large beads (optional).

Basically all you are doing is making a chain of buttons – to do this first of all chop a small piece of invisble thread (about 6cm) and tie one end through one whole of the button with a double knot. 20140121_223830Then tie another button to the other end of the thread. Carry on doing this until you have made a chain of about 10 buttons (this is up to you, if it is for a door curtain then obviously make longer button chains).20140121_223933 You can also tie some beads into your garland, just thread the invisible thread through the centre of the bead and secure it with a knot, then tie the other piece of thread through the centre and secure with a knot. Keep making chains of buttons until you think you have enough to cover your space. Hang them over the sofa or a chair to stop them from tangling.20140121_223643Marvellous, now for the main thread, I plaited three colours like I did for the Beaded Heart Garland you can find on my blog – for a quick reminder, cut three colours of wool into lengths just longer than the length of your space. Tie them together, safety pin it to something secure (like your jeans) and plait away! 20140107_173448Use drawing pins to secure the long length to your wall. Then simply tie your strings of buttons to the wool, at 5cm intervals with a secure double knot.20140204_215517So there we go, a lovely garland of colourful buttons – this would also be great for a kids room, providing the buttons were very securely tied and out of reach! I chose to hang mine above my Lots of Love Hearts garland, for a double whammy of sparkly, dangliness so you should definitely make one of them too – follow the link at the bottom of the page.
